What is mould?
Mould is a type of fungi made up of naturally occurring organisms which grow best in damp and poorly ventilated areas, and reproduces by making spores.
Where is mould found?

MERCURY CLEAN UP
What is mercury?
Elemental mercury is a shiny, silver-gray metal that is a liquid at room temperature
Where is mercury found?
Mercury was commonly used in thermometers, barometers, sphygmomanometers, dental amalgams,
batteries, fluorescent lights and electrical switches often found in the home and workplace. Mercury
was also commonly used as an additive in household latex paint prior to the early 1990s.
Why is mercury dangerous?
When a mercury-containing device is broken or liquid mercury is spilled, it evaporates, greatly increasing
the exposure risk. Inhalation of elemental mercury vapor is the most common route of exposure to
individuals and at high levels can harm the brain, heart, kidneys, lungs, and immune system.

What is PCB?
PCB or Polychlorinated Biphenyls are a class of man-made chemicals that were originally used as

Where is PCB found?
Even though PCBs are banned in Canada, they may still be found in a variety of products including:
Fluorescent light ballasts. Transformers and capacitors. Oil used in motors and hydraulic systems. Paints

Health effects related to PCB exposure include cancer, and issues arising with the reproductive, immune,
and nervous systems.

RODENT DROPPINGS AND HANTAVIRUS
What is Hantavirus?
Hantavirus is a virus which is hosted by rodents such as deermice and the white-footed mouse commonly found in the interior of BC.
Where is Hantavirus found?
Hantavirus is shed in the urine, fecal droppings and saliva of rodents.
Why is Hantavirus dangerous?
Hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS) is a potentially fatal respiratory disease caused by hantavirus. Human exposure can occur when simple actions such as sweeping or cleaning result in disturbance to excreted urine, droppings or nesting that may be contaminated with hantavirus and subsequently inhaled. Other avenues of human exposure can be ingesting food contaminated with hantavirus or touching an infected surface and then touching the nose or mouth.
