Hantavirus Remediation

Hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS) is a potentially fatal respiratory disease caused by hantavirus which is a virus hosted by rodents such as deer mice and the white-footed mouse.  Hantavirus is shed in the rodent’s urine, fecal droppings and saliva.  While the occurrence of hantavirus (and HPS) is relatively rare, it has been documented in Western Canada, including BC.

The potential for human exposure can occur when simple actions such as sweeping or cleaning can result in disturbance to excreted urine, droppings or nesting that may be contaminated with hantavirus and subsequently inhaled.

Other avenues of human exposure can be ingesting food contaminated with hanta virus or touching an infected surface and then touching the nose or mouth.

Areas where rodent activity is obvious should be professionally assessed and decontaminated.
